Let it be written....

Today is the day for a huge first for me.  But, let me guarantee you, it won't be the last!

This morning was the first time since my dad has been here that we woke up to an alarm.  7:24 am.  Ya.  Pretty early for me.  Why you ask?  The Heart Run was today.  I made it!!!

Starting the race.  The kids were so excited.  That's me.  #7459!!  Lyn is behind me.  For those who are unaware, a 5k is 3.1 miles.  I have been training for this since November.  When I started, I hadn't run longer that to the end of then street.  I've always had an excuse.  I took the excuse away.  No excuses any more.  If I didn't want to run, then I wouldn't run, but I wasn't going to make an excuse.

That's me.  The green shirt with the white hat.  Lyn is beside me.  This is the end of the race.  We ran the 3.1 miles in 36 minutes and 19 seconds.  Just over a 12 minute mile.  Not bad for my first race ever.  Lyn and I hope to improve our time and do better at the Skinny Raven run with Dana!!!  One last photo, because I look SO great!!

The race is over!  We did it!!

Let's get real!!

Okay, removing comment, because I am going to be honest and blunt. This is going to be very real. It will be hard with me because I will share a lot of personal information. Some of it is not a pretty picture, however, from where I sit now, it is crucial to understanding the base principles. Some people don’t like that and if you are one of those, then stop reading right now!

Also, this is not directed at one person. I have heard quite a bit over the last little bit and I just want to address it with my thoughts. These are in no way scientific or can be backed by proof. This is my experience and insights. So, take it or leave it, it’s up to you.
Exercise and Diet. 2 very dreaded words. At least to most people. When we moved to Alaska July 21st, 2009, I saw pictures of myself that were taken as part of a family photo shoot with the Burnsides. To this day, I have not displayed a single picture with me in it. It was a big reality check for me. So, the next day, I bought a scale, signed up for Weight Watchers Online and did the dreaded first weigh in to have my beginning weight. The number staring back at me was the heaviest I have ever been. I could not believe it. But, if I am honest with you, I could believe it. I had just let myself go. So, the number staring back in my face was 175 lbs. I am 5’2” and that is VERY unhealthy for my height. So, I entered my number and off I went.

Over the course of the next 12 weeks, I worked out a total of 6 times. Yep. you read that right. Most of the changes I made were to my diet. I lost 27 lbs in 12 weeks. I was amazed/shocked/embarrassed by what I was putting in my mouth and not even thinking twice about it. America has gotten so used to fast food, easy food and big portion sizes. Some small modifications made a HUGE difference. 27 lbs. Once I hit that point, it was harder to get the work off, but I had made a huge step and was very pleased with the results. I would never let myself get back to that point. So, after 12 weeks, I was at 148 lbs. Since that time, I have lost 7 more pounds. I am down to 141. The computer system says that for my height, the ideal weight is 115 lbs. Let’s be honest people. There isn’t a SNOWBALLS prayer that I will ever reach 115. I am realistic. Crazy but realistic.

Why do I tell you all of this? As stated in a few earlier posts, I have started training for a 5K. I had never in my life run before and in November I started. As of today, I could do a 5K in 33 minutes. A 5K is 3.1 miles. Not to shabby if you ask me. As I have been posting my progress, I have had several comments that people wish they had an accountability buddy. Someone to help them stay on the path. The more I have thought about this, the more I think it’s just an excuse. Yep, I just said it! :)

When all else is done and gone, at the end of the day, you are left with yourself. If you can’t be accountable to yourself, there is no point to start. From the beginning, I have done this all by myself. Something clicked in me and this time, I was doing it for me. It was my face staring back at me in the mirror. I won’t lie – it’s nice to have a buddy. It makes working out more fun. Today, Stacie and I ran together. We didn’t talk. We didn’t record that both of us were there. She started doing the training for a 5K a few days ago for herself. It is fine to be inspired by someone, but if you are only doing it because you are accountable to someone, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. When it boils down to it, your exercise and changes will be a fading memory when life gets in the way.

However, if you do it for you and only you. You make the change. You are the one that gets up in the morning and makes the workout happen. Is it easy? NO!!! But, I force myself. If I can’t go running, I do one of my exercise videos or the Wii Fit. I do something. If the kids are using the TV, I do laps up and down the stairs. I do something. Now, that I am at the place where I currently stand, I know that I got here. Me and ONLY me! I don’t have to attribute my success to anyone else. It is something that I have shown to myself is important. Do I have off days? YES! Today, I had Carls Jr. for lunch. (It was SO yummy!)

So, what I am saying is get yourself off the couch. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you that you can do it. When it comes to the end of the day, you are responsible for you. No one else puts the food in your mouth and no one can walk your steps or jog your miles for you. Today I did 6 MILES in 55 miles!!! Did you see that? Yes. I did it. Just me. Stacie was there for 1/2 the time until she had to leave, and I could have stopped, but I had something to prove to myself. So, I did it. Show yourself that you can do it. I KNOW you can! You know you can! Put your mind to it and show yourself what you are really made of.

You think you don't have time? Do you really want to talk to me about that? I have 4 kids, I homeschool 2 of them, and have the other 2 under my feel the whole time. My husband is deployed so I am a 24 hour a day single parent who tries to keep the house cleaned and kids fed. Wanna go there? Let's go! You have time! You have to make time!

Now, I’ll get off my high horse! My weight isn’t much different from the end of my 12 weeks, but I have seen phenomenal results in my inches and pants size. But, more important is my stamina. I did 6 miles today people. In November, I thought I would die because I ran 1 minute. Show yourself that you can do it! Really!!
